The Hideout Kitchen & Cafe, Lafayette

It’a story that I love to tell…it all started from an ad placed on Craig’s List for a line cook.   I met and interviewed a young boy from the Philippines (19 years old at the time) and I hired him on the spot at our restaurant, Little Star Cafe, in Walnut Creek.  He had no experience cooking in a restaurant, but from the moment I met JB Balingit, his warm, friendly demeanor and inviting smile, I just knew he was going to be a Little Star Cafe gem!  He soon became our  lead cook, and was quickly promoted to our kitchen manager. Today JB is the proud owner of his own restaurant, The Hideout Kitchen & Cafe in Lafayette, at only 26 years old!

After leaving Little Star Cafe he went on to work at Jack’s Restaurant & Bar in Pleasant Hill.  It was no surprise to us that within no time he was promoted their Director of Culinary Operations.  Today he is creating his own wonderful restaurant vision at The Hideout Kithchen & Cafe – and I must say, I feel like a very proud parent watching his culinary vision evolve into this wonderful neighborhood bistro.  The food is delicious and comforting.  This cafe is tastefully designed and decorated and we love that he repurposed and built so much in the cafe all on his own!
